Former York City and Premiership footballer Clarke Carlisle has been named as the victim of Monday morning's crash on the A64.

Carlisle was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary with serious injuries after being involved in a collision with a lorry.

It's understood this morning that he is in a critical condition, but his injuries are not life threatening.

The crash happened at around 7.30am on Monday morning near Bishopthorpe. The road was closed for several hours as officers investigated and an air ambulance landed on the carriageway.

North Yorkshire Police said a 35-year-old man had been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after an incident involving a lorry and a pedestrian on the A64 yesterday morning, but haven't confirmed his identity.

Well wishers including the Football Association and many of his former teams have Tweeted their support for Carlise and his family.
