York Council Encourages Staff to Volunteer

York Council Volunteering 130613

2:55pm 13th June 2013

City of York Council is encouraging staff to get involved with volunteering in their local communities. The council will be launching its Staff Volunteering Scheme at its first ever Volunteering Fair on Thursday 13 June to help raise the profile of the broad range of local volunteering opportunities available in York.

The scheme and volunteering fair aim to support community and voluntary groups across the city while also giving staff extra outlets for their talents and interests and adding to their professional experience.

The Fair will include representatives from a number of different organisations including:

  • York Older People’s Assembly
  • York Playspace
  • St Leonard’s Hospice
  • The Island
  • The Wilberforce Trust
  • York Carers Centre
  • Door 84 Youth Centre
  • York Unifying Multi-cultural Initiative (YUMI)
  • York and District Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Forum (LGBT Forum)
  • York Blind and Partially Sighted Society
  • Caroline’s Rainbow Foundation
  • Age UK

York Cares and York Council for Voluntary Services (York CVS) will be on hand to give information and advice on other local activities and on running volunteer projects. Council representatives will also be available to talk about the volunteering scheme and volunteering opportunities available within the council.

A varied and interesting range of volunteer roles are available in York including befriending older people or assisting after a hospital stay, fundraising, renovating, researching, updating websites and other social media, mentoring, grant funding applications, working with vulnerable people, supporting youth schemes, giving carers support and helping in shops, gardens, kitchens or offices.

Councillor Linsay Cunningham-Cross, cabinet member for Crime and Stronger Communities said: “Volunteers play a vital role across the city and the council takes volunteering very seriously. City of York Council is a member of York Cares, which helps put large organisations in York in touch with volunteering opportunities for their staff. We want to be a positive example for volunteering in York and this will be a fantastic opportunity for staff to see what is available locally.

“Volunteering is a positive experience in many different ways and it brings real benefits to local York communities.”
