2:44pm 28th May 2013

Police are appealing for witnesses following a collision which involved a pedal cyclist and a car on the A63 near Selby close to the junction with the A1041.

The collision occurred at around 12.50pm on Sunday 26 May 2013 and involved a white Citroen Berlingo which collided with a pedal cyclist who was riding a purple and silver cycle.

Police also want to trace the driver of a grey van which overtook the white Berlingo moments before the collision.

It is understood that moments before the collision, the driver of the Berlingo had moved to assist a fire appliance which was en-route to an emergency call. On seeing what happened the fire crew stopped to assist and provided first aid to the cyclist until the arrival of an ambulance.

All vehicles were travelling from the junction with the A1041 towards the A19.

The cyclist, a 24-year-old man from the Selby area, sustained serious head injuries and was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

Police are appealing for the driver of the grey van and anyone else who witnessed the collision or saw any of the vehicles prior to the incident, including the cyclist to please contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 1 and ask for PC Martin Brown, or you can email him at martin.brown@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk
