City of York council is encouraging jobseekers and people wanting to improve their skills and qualifications to visit a jobs fair at the Hilton Hotel on Tower Street today (22nd May).

The event, which has been organised through partnerships between City of York Council, Learning City York, Job Centre Plus and York Learning aims to bring together local employers and will offer advice as well as employment opportunities.

There will be several employers present along with learning providers and other agencies offering free help and advice for people to improve their skills and help them in their search for employment.

Cllr James Alexander, Labour leader for City of York Council said: “The event that was held in October last year was a huge success, attracting over 1500 residents, many of whom accessed job opportunities, advice and training. The recent Jobseekers figures showed unemployment levels in York to buck the national trend by recording a fall, however there is still work to be done in helping residents find employment and events such as this are an important part of that work.”

The fair will have a designated quiet area to enable people to fill in application forms with the help of some excellent local skills and training providers.

Companies attending the fair include: City of York Council, The Retreat, Addecco, Allied Health Care, The Army, B & Q, Blue Bird Care, Bridge Recruitment, Bright Beginnings, Castle Howard, CEX (new game shop), Cote' Brasserie (new restaurant), Cyclops Electronics, Eures, Manpower, Mencap, Monk Bar Hotel, PMP (representing Nestle'), Portakabin, Search Consultancy, Securicare, St Anne's Organisation, UBU, Wilf Ward, York Teaching Hospital & Yorkshire Water.

The event will also contain stalls for some of the city’s training providers including; The Apprenticeship partnership, Higher York, Babcocks (National Careers Service) CITB and York Learning (formally Adult Ed, Future Prospects and York Training Centre).
