Pocklington and Market Weighton to Get a Youth Police and Crime Commissioner

Humberside's Police Commissioner says he will still appoint a Youth Advisor despite the first one quitting yesterday.

Kent Police Youth Ambassador Paris Brown stood down yesterday in a row over violent and racist tweets. Matthew Grove says he still believes the post is important and will find a representative for Humberside.

It's said North Yorkshire Commissioner Julia Mulligan has no plans to appoint a youth ambassador.

Matthew Grove said: “It’s vital that the police and partners in community safety connect with our young people as they are an important part of our community. In our region we are already on the front foot with the fantastic work in Humberside Police with Operation Lifestyle, Rock Challenge and Night Challenge. Independent organisations such as Prison? Me? No-Way! also make an impact on the lives of young people to divert them away from crime and anti-social behaviour. We continue to build relationships with local schools, with neighbourhood officers working with children and students and in some cases even having their own office on the premises.

In my Police and Crime Plan I have stated I will look to appoint a Youth Ambassador, and ideally I’d like to appoint one in each of the four unitary areas. Youth Ambassadors would be volunteers and would work with existing youth organisations and schools to listen to the opinions of our young people and assist in the fight to reduce crime by promoting educational messages regarding drugs, alcohol and internet safety. Since I took office my Deputy and I have met with various parties to find out what work is already going on, and how we can have a positive impact to achieve more. Local authorities and voluntary organisations are going through a period of change with youth services so it is vital we work closer together in the future to avoid duplication and deliver the best service possible with the resources available. We will work with our young people and partners over the coming months to develop the concept of Youth Ambassadors, who will be the voice of young people at the very heart of policing.”
