Calls For Tougher Action on Dangerous Dog Owners
7:50am 5th April 2013
The MP for Thirsk and Malton is calling for tougher punishments for irresponsible dog owners.
Anne McIntosh says dog control orders could be brought in as concerns grow over dangerous dogs.
She spoke to Minster FM while visiting the Blue Cross centre in Thirsk.
Miss McIntosh said, "This is a wonderful opportunity to see firsthand the work locally of one of the leading charities for rescue dogs and cats waiting to be re homed.
"I want to thank personally all who work there for the work they do. It is particularly appropriate given the statistics on stray dogs and other aspects rating to dog control and dog welfare in the Committee’s report published on 15th February.
“In our report, the Committee recommended that Defra assess the funding of dog welfare charities so as to provide greater support to local authority antisocial behaviour teams and other bodies locally, so as to enable them to properly tackle dog-related problems.
“We were impressed by the use of dog control notices issues by Local Authorities in Scotland but I recognise Local Authorities would require proper resources to issue and deal with these, in relation to antisocial behaviour and potential crime committed by irresponsible dog owners.”
