Emmerdale and York Posties in Charity Football Competition

Football 220213

8:00am 24th February 2013

A team of Yorkshire Post Office football enthusiasts have challenged the cast of Yorkshire TV’s Emmerdale to a friendly fundraiser on Sunday 24th February at York Railway Institute in aid of St. Leonards Hospice, York – kick-off 2.30pm. And the goal will be much needed funds for the End of Life charity that serves the city and the local community.

Andy Day - postman, team manager and club secretary of Acomb-based Sunday League football team Marcia Grey FC - has organised the event with the invaluable help of Jade Hessay. Andy, who has recently obtained a two year sponsorship deal with York-based law firm, Pattinson & Brewer, has kitted out the Post Office team with the Marcia Grey kit and selected his best performers for the forthcoming match. He said:

“I am so chuffed with the support we have had from my work colleagues, the Post Office, Pattinson & Brewer and, most of all, from the cast of Emmerdale, who have really entered into the spirit of the competition by putting up a brilliant team of players and supporters. We’re very grateful to them and Yorkshire TV for their involvement.”

The Sunday leagues are a popular feature in the local press, and photos of the Marcia Grey team appear in the YEP and on their website www.marciagrey.co.uk regularly. The addition of this fixture to the forthcoming season’s games is expected to add hundreds of extra spectators to the game, if only to see whether the Emmerdale team can play as well as they can act! The posties think they have the edge as they’re on their feet all day…

Pattinson & Brewer partner Jane Radcliffe said:

“Andy Day has been a our Bridge Street office ‘postie’ for years, and his cheerful, positive approach has so impressed us that when he said he was looking for support for his worthy local cause we couldn’t say no. I know we are required to give some serious vocal support on Sunday 24thFebruary and we’re providing a ‘Challenge Cup’ for the winning team. Hopefully we can make this an annual event.”

Jane will present Pattinson & Brewer’s specially-commissioned cup to the winning team, and photos of the event will be published on the Pattinson & Brewer website. Other raffle prizes are being provided by local companies, including Streamline Taxis.
