City of York Announce Junkcraft Winners

York council

11:47am 15th February 2013

Young ‘craftcyclers’ will be announced today as the winners of ‘Junkcraft’, a competition, which launched last year to promote the reuse of recycled materials amongst children.

City of York Council’s Smarter York campaign, in partnership with local publisher, Junkcraft Books, ran the competition for Key Stage 2 children where they were tasked with designing and building either: a hotrod racing car, a plane or an out-of-this-world spaceship – but all entries had to be made from recycled items found around the home.

Prizes will be awarded by the Lord Mayor of York, Cllr Keith Hyman, and the Sheriff, Cllr Paul Firth today at Copmanthorpe Primary School.

Cllr David Levene, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, said: "This competition was a fun and creative way to get children involved in learning about the many uses simple household items have and how they can be recycled.

“We had over 100 entries and 10 schools taking part in the competition, so it’s great to see so many schools getting involved in spreading the Smarter York message."

The Lord Mayor of York said: “We had some extremely original and resourceful models submitted, and I’m really looking forward to presenting the winners with their prizes.”

The winning entries will receive a set of Junkcraft books, a glue gun, a construction set prize by Meccano, plus a Super Construction Set prize for their school.
