New Cycle Store Opens at York Station

East Coast Cycle Store 140113

4:56pm 14th January 2013

Train and station operator East Coast has teamed up with cycle retailer Cycle Heaven and City of York Council to offer a new high-security cycle storage facility on York station.

The facility, at the south end of Platform 1, was officially opened today (Monday, 14 January 2013).

The safe storage facility is managed by Cycle Heaven, and offers enhanced security inside a gated enclosure accessible only using a special key fob.

East Coast Stations and Property Director Tim Hedley-Jones said: “This new facility is a very welcome addition to our existing facilities for cyclists in York.

“The new compound offers a higher level of secure storage: we expect it to prove highly popular with cyclists, particularly those with higher-value bikes.”

For periods of up to one week, cyclists can check into the facility via the Cycle Heaven shop on York station during its normal opening hours on Monday to Saturday, plus Sunday during the summer months. Staff will then store the cycle inside the secure facility for a small daily fee.

Those wishing to store a cycle inside the secure compound for periods of over a week can rent a key fob from Cycle Heaven to access the facility directly at any time. Access can be purchased on a weekly, monthly, quarterly or annual basis.

Cycle Heaven’s owner Andy Shrimpton believes the new secure storage will prove very popular with bike owners. He said: “With some top-of-the-range cycles valued at several thousand pounds, peace of mind is very important to their owners.

“The new compound offers an enhanced level of security compared with the traditional open cycle racks. Early indications are that it is proving very popular, particularly among owners of higher-value bikes”.

Coun. Dave Merrett, City of York Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, Planning and Sustainability, is welcoming the new facility as the latest in a series of positive developments for cyclists in the city.

Coun. Merrett said: “York is one of the top cycling cities in the UK, with over 20 per cent of the city’s population commuting to work by bike every day and hundreds heading to and from the station.

“I hope that 2013/14 will be remembered as the year of cycling in York. With the recent announcement that the Grande Depart is coming to Yorkshire, as well as our annual York Cycling City Centre Races taking place this summer, cycling is becoming more and more popular among thousands of our residents. So, I welcome this new secure bike facility, which will hopefully encourage even more people to take up cycling.”

York station, which is managed by East Coast, was named as Britain’s Station of the Year in the 2011 National Rail Awards, while its facilities for cyclists also won the Station of the Year award in the 2011 National Cycle-Rail Awards.
