York Protest over 'Workfare' Schemes for Unemployed
8:01am 15th December 2012
A protest's behind held in York today against work experience placements for the unemployed.
Companies in the city centre will see protests by opponents who claim the work experience programmes are replacing paid jobs.
The York Stop the Cuts group also say they don't believe the schemes help people find work.
In response the Department for Work and Pensions says:
"We stand by all of our schemes that equip jobseekers with the skills and experience they need to find work and applaud all those employers and organisations who are giving young people an invaluable opportunity in the work place.
"Work experience has given thousands of young and long-term unemployed people a start and those who offer placements should be congratulated for the part they play in doing that.
"It's simply not right that charities and companies who are offering opportunities to people, often people who are stigmatised and vulnerable, should be subject to such a short sighted, vicious campaign."
