New Lord Mayor Chosen for York

Julie Gunnell

2:35pm 26th November 2012

The city’s next Lord Mayor has been chosen as Labour councillor Julie Gunnell.

She tells Minster FM her reaction when she found out she'd got the job:

Next year’s Lord Mayor falls to the council’s Labour Group based on proportionality on the council.  Coun. Gunnell will carry out the role for 2013/14, after stepping down from the council’s Cabinet.

Labour Group Leader, Coun. Alexander said:

“I want to pay tribute to Julie and her contribution since becoming Cabinet Member for Corporate Services on Labour taking control in 2011.  She ensured we came in with a balanced budget last year, as I’m confident she will do again this year before becoming Lord Mayor.

“By that time the council will be moving into its new home at West Offices, a project Julie has been integral to over a long period.  I thank her for her service on the Cabinet and look forward to working with her during her term as Lord Mayor, where economic development will continue to be high on our agenda”.

Coun. Gunnell will be sworn in at the Annual Council meeting in May.
