York MP Sees Suicide Bombing on Afghanistan Visit

7:20am 26th November 2012

A York MP tells Minster FM he saw a suicide bombing while on a trip to Afghanistan.

York Central's Hugh Bayley was in the country as part of his new role as head of the NATO Parliamentary Alliance.

The Assembly is an inter-parliamentary organisation made up of 250 parliamentarians from NATO’s 28 member countries.

Parliamentarians from NATO’s partnership countries also attend the Assembly’s meetings.

The Assembly provides a forum for international parliamentary dialogue on security, political and economic matters. It aims to foster mutual understanding between parliamentarians of the key security challenges facing the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

He says :“NATO is fundamental to our security on both sides of the Atlantic.  The North Atlantic area still faces security threats to which a collective response, through our Alliance, provides the best defence."

"I am honoured to have been elected President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. I want the Assembly to encourage NATO to become more transparent and further improve the way it reports its activities to National Parliaments in member states, to our Assembly and to the public.”

Hugh Bayley is now preparing a report into Afghanistan's future.
