There were reports someone was inside the burning building.

A man got out unharmed and the small fire was put out.

North Yorkshire fire and rescue service say the blaze is being treated as deliberate.

North Yorkshire Fire Sevice Statement:

Fire crews from York responded to reports of a fire in the former Reg Vardy car showroom on Lawrence Street.

On their attendance at 22:34hrs, an additional appliance from Acomb and an officer were requested when it was then believed that persons were within the burning derelict building.

One male did leave the building unharmed, and relevant details were taken by police officers at the scene. No other persons were present in the building.

Fire crews extinguished a small fire located on the first floor, which had also caused flames and debris to fall to the ground floor, by use of one hosereel, two breathing appartus and a thermal imaging camera.

The cause was believed deliberate.
