Detectives are appealing for information after a man was seriously assaulted in York.

The victim, a 35 year old local man, was found unconscious with serious head injuries on the playing fields behind Burton Green Primary School in Clifton at around 2am on Tuesday 29th May 2012.

He was taken to York District Hospital where he is in a coma.

It is believed that the victim may have sustained his injuries up to two hours before he was found.

Three local men aged 19, 21 and 36 have been arrested in connection with the incident and remain in police custody for questioning.

Despite the arrests, officers, who have been making extensive enquiries in the Clifton area, need witnesses to come forward to help the investigation.

Inspector Ian Dyer, of York CID, said:

“As a result of this incident there is a man fighting for his life in hospital.

“We are currently working to establish the full circumstances and I would like to thank the people who have already come forward with information that has been very helpful to the investigation so far.

“However, I am urging anyone else who saw anything suspicious in the area of Burton Green or Kingsway North either late on Monday 28 May or in the early hours of Tuesday 29 May to contact the police or Crimestoppers as soon as possible.”

Anyone who can help officers with their enquiries is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 – select option 2 – and ask for York CID.

Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
