York's 'Northern Pride' event for 2012

12:00am 5th June 2012

York's gay Pride event takes a major leap forward in 2012 with many advances, including main sponsorship by one of the city's major employers - Northern Rail - and will be known as York 'Northern' Pride 2012.

Northern Rail, which runs trains across the north of England and has its headquarters in York, aims to provide an excellent service for all sectors of the community and actively promotes diversity and equal opportunities within its own workforce.

Adrian Thompson, Director of Human Resources at Northern Rail says:

"We were impressed by York Pride's combination of serious messages and quality entertainment. Our continued support for the event helps demonstrate our commitment to members of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community who work for or travel with Northern Rail.

"It sends a strong message across the North and beyond about Northern Rail as a diverse and inclusive employer."

The event on Saturday 21st July is planned to begin with a march from York Minster - centre of recent controversy after remarks by Dr John Sentamu about marriage equality were seen by some as homophobic - through the city centre to a new, larger venue at Bustardthorpe Field, adjacent to York Racecourse. An afternoon of entertainment will follow, including a mix of recognised and up-and-coming acts, with food, alcohol, various stalls and activities all available at the site.

'Following the huge success of York Pride 2011, which attracted national media coverage after it commemorated the homophobic murder of former York resident David Kato, we needed a new venue as numbers became too high for our former home at Rowntree Park', 'said Dan Sidley, Chair of York Pride "With support from the City of York Council we have found a wonderful new location overlooking the Knavesmire, where we can significantly expand the activities and entertainment on offer. We invite everyone, regardless of sexuality, to join us for the celebration march and afternoon of entertainment on 21st July."
