In one of the worst employment climates of the century, desperate job hunters are admitting the lengths they would go to in order to get onto the career ladder. Six in ten adults are happy to lie on their CV and shockingly one in ten have faked a reference.

With unemployment so high, new research has revealed how most job hunters are resorting to lying on their CV and even faking references to get their foot on the job ladder.

The new study has revealed that six in ten (60%) adults are happy to lie their way through an interview; and top of the fib-list for anxious job hunters are lying about age, their marriage, having children and even whether they went to university in order to get through the selection process. Giving themselves extra grades and adding levels of experience are other common themes.

More shockingly, it has emerged that one in ten CVs boast an entirely fictional reference, with Brits using friends or family members to give a glowing account on their behalf.

Justifying their motives, 40% think it's more important to have the skills to blag and get the job done than it is to have a great CV.

In York:
The approximate amount of people who are happy to lie on their CV: 88,000
The approximate people have admitted to faking a reference: 14,500
The approximate amount of people who think it's more important to have the skills to blag and get the job done than it is to have a great CV: 58,700

In Harrogate:
The approximate amount of people who are happy to lie on their CV: 73,500
The approximate people have admitted to faking a reference: 12,100
The approximate amount of people who think it's more important to have the skills to blag and get the job done than it is to have a great CV: 49,000
