York's official tourism agency, Visit York, has announced its search for a new Chairman of the Board, following the retirement this March of John Yeomans, who has held the post of Chairman for four years.
The newly appointed Chairman will play a vital role in developing the strategic direction for tourism in York and driving the growth of the visitor economy in the greater York area. Tourism in York is worth £443million a year and represents world class visitor attractions, a growing cultural and festival offer, as well as constantly developing accommodation, retail, and hospitality facilities enjoyed by seven million visitors a year.
During John's term of office York's tourism sector has celebrated several outstanding accolades including: Telegraph City of the Year; European City of the Year; Best Gastro Destination in the UK and Fifth Best in Europe; Britain's Most Beautiful City and Britain's Favourite Small City. Visit York also scooped a European Excellence Award for 'Best Tourism Campaign' in 2010.
Speaking about the new recruitment drive, Gillian Cruddas MBE, Visit York's Chief Executive, said:
'This is a fantastic opportunity to make a real and substantial difference to tourism in York, building on Visit York's success so far. We are looking to the future with confidence, examining our key objectives and core priorities and we look forward to working with our new chairman to ensure that York continues to develop its strong profile as a world class visitor destination.'
