"He abused a position of trust and power."
That's what officers from North Yorkshire Police say a York karate instructor did.
Liam O'Grady from Osbaldwick has been sentenced to 5 years behind bars and added to the sex offender register after being found guilty of four counts of rape and sexual grooming against a 12/13 year old girl.
Dectective Inspector Shaun Page has spoke to Minster FM from outside the courts:
Ofiicial statement from North Yorkshire Police
A karate instructor from York has been sentenced to five years’ imprisonment after abusing a 13-year-old girl.
Liam O’Grady, aged 30, was found guilty of sexually abusing a child and sexual grooming following a week-long trial at York Crown Court in December 2011.
O’Grady had sent thousands of texts to his victim, including sexual pictures, and he also abused her in his car and at his house.
Detective Inspector Shaun Page, of North Yorkshire Police’s Protecting Vulnerable Persons Unit, said:
“Liam O’ Grady is a paedophile and I am satisfied that the today’s sentence reflect the serious offences he is guilty of.
“As a karate instructor and role model, he held a position of trust which he completely abused by taking advantage of an innocent young girl.
“O’Grady’s arrogance and repeated denials of the offences he committed meant that rather than pleading guilty when he had the chance, he has subjected his victim and her family to the further turmoil of a lengthy court process.
“I hope this sentence makes O’Grady face up to the fact that what he has done is sick and completely unacceptable.
“I also hope that the end of this case can bring some comfort to the victim and her family and helps them move on with their lives.”
