Man arrested over alleged domestic violence in York

2:33pm 6th January 2012

Police investigating an incident in York on News Year's Day are appealing to a potentially vital witness to come forward.

In the early hours of the Sunday 1st January 2012 a 31 year old woman who was in fear of violence from her partner flagged down a passing car on Lindsey Avenue.

The car kindly stopped and picked the victim up and later dropped her off on Water Lane near the RSPCA dog kennels.

The driver of the car is described as elderly and it is believed that he was driving to Clifton to see his daughter.

Detective Constable Stuart Barnett, of North Yorkshire Police's Protecting Vulnerable Person's Unit, said:

"The police would like to speak to the driver of the car, who came to the aid of the victim as he may have information that can help us with our enquiries."

Anyone who can help the police with their investigation is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 - select option 2 - and ask for DC Stuart Barnett or York PVP.

Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111, quoting reference 12120002433.

A 33 year old local man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is currently in police custody as enquiries continue.
