12:57pm 16th December 2011

Detectives in York are appealing for witnesses after a woman was robbed in the city.

The 52-year-old victim lost her handbag in the incident which occurred on the railway footbridge between Leeman Road and Wilton Rise on Thursday 15 December 2011.

She was walking up the steps of the bridge heading towards Wilton Rise when she was approached by a man who pushed her in the chest before stealing her bag and making off on a cycle towards Holgate Road.

The offender is described as white, between 16 and 18-years-old, approximately 5ft 4in tall, with a medium build.

He was wearing a black scarf covering the lower part of his face, a long-sleeved white top and blue jeans.

Police are appealing to any witnesses to the incident to come forward.

Detective Constable Kendra Bamber, of York CID, said:

“The victim was hurt in the incident but fortunately her injuries are not serious.

“However, she has been left very shaken and I am urging the public to help us identify the offender.

“If you were in the area at the time of the robbery and saw someone matching the description of the suspect, please contact the police or Crimestoppers with information.”

Anyone who can help the police with their enquiries is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police, on 101 – select option 2 – and ask for DC Kendra Bamber, or York CID. Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111, quoting reference number 12110211001.
