The fight for Afghan women

12:01am 5th November 2011

The York Feminist Network will be holding a demonstration in York city centre today (Saturday 5th November 2011) to show our solidarity with women's rights activists in Afghanistan.

This is part of a national campaign run by No Women, No Peace to ensure that Afghan women's voices will be heard at the upcoming national conference in December when the transition in Afghanistan will be discussed.

"You can't build peace by leaving half the people out." (a quote from No Women, No Peace.)

Men and women will be gathering in St. Helen's Square from 13:00 wearing green scarves as these have become symbolic of women's rights activism in Afghanistan.

They will also have black tape on their mouths (women only) as is seen in the No Women, No Peace campaign video.

At 13:25 they will take off this tape to represent women's voices being heard if the promises of UN Resolution 1325 are kept.
