CCTV released of Selby assault suspect

5:26pm 26th October 2011

Selby police have renewed their appeal for witnesses after a man sustained serious facial injuries during an assault.

The victim, a 24-year-old local man, suffered a broken jaw and eye socket during the attack which occurred outside the taxi rank on James Street at 1.25am on Saturday 15th October 2011, and continued behind boots.

He has since had two operations to insert a metal plate and some plastic into his face.

Officers investigating the case have been reviewing CCTV footage in the area and have identified a man they believe is responsible for the assault.

It is believed that the suspect left Kans nightclub five minutes before the incident and crossed the road to where the victim was standing with his girlfriend.

He then carried out the attack after insulting the victim's girlfriend and made off in the direction New Lane.

He is described as between 5ft 10in and 6ft 2in tall, aged in his 30s, with a stocky build and dark spiky hair. He was wearing dark-coloured Ralph Lauren polo shirt, smart jeans and smart shoes.

Police have released a CCTV image of the suspect and are appealing to anyone who recognises him to come forward.

Detective Constable Amanda Bostwick, of Selby CID, said:

"Hopefully by releasing the CCTV image of the suspect someone will recognise him and tell us who he is.

"He is suspected of causing some very serious injuries to the victim and we need to find out who he is.

"I am appealing to anyone who recognises the suspect to do the right thing and contact the police or Crimestoppers, anonymously, and help us identify him."

Potential witnesses

Officers are also appealing to three people who were at the scene around the time of the assault to get in touch and let the police know if they saw anything that could help the investigation.

Detectives would like to talk to a young couple who got into a taxi just minutes before the incident, as the suspect bumped into them before they entered the cab.

Police also believe a young man wearing a dark shirt and a large white tie may be able to help with their enquiries.

DC Bostwick added:

"There were some people at the scene either before or during the assault who may have information vital to the investigation.

"We need to speak to those people as they may well be able to help us identify the suspect and get justice for the victim."

Anyone who can help the police with their enquiries is urged to contact DC Amanda Bostwick, of Selby CID, on 0845 60 60 24 7, quoting reference number 12110174963.

Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
