Police investigate York vandalism spree
12:01am 8th October 2011
York police are appealing for witnesses after a number of vehicles were damaged by vandals in the Heworth area.
Overnight between Saturday 1 October and Sunday 2 October 2011, eight vehicles were targeted by offenders who appeared to begin their crime spree starting in Burnholme Avenue and making their way to the junction of Fourth Avenue and Fifth Avenue taking in a number of other streets along the way.
Police believe that the first vehicle was damaged at around 10pm on Saturday night and are appealing to anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area to contact them with information.
Pc Mike Brocken, of Heworth Safer Neighbourhood Team, said:
"It appears that the offenders have been running over vehicles or deliberately stamping on their windscreens.
"This trail of destruction has amounted to thousands of pounds in repair costs to the victims, not to mention the money they will lose having to take time off work to get the damage repaired.
"I am appealing to anyone with information about this mindless act of vandalism to contact the police or Crimestoppers as soon as possible."
Anyone who can help the police with the investigation is urged to contact Pc Brocken, of Heworth Safer Neighbourhood Team, on 0845 60 60 24 7.
Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
