Detectives in York are appealing for witnesses after a woman was forced into the back of a car at Clifton Moor in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Police were alerted to the incident, which occurred at around 2.36am today (1 October 2011), by a concerned member of the public who saw the victim being verbally abused and assaulted by a man before being forcibly put into the back of a maroon Mercedes car outside B&Q.
The victim is described as being white, aged in her late 30s, with a very slim build and bleached blonde hair. She was wearing a black dress.
Officers are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or can help identify the woman to come forward with information.
Detective Inspector Ian Dyer, of York CID, said:
“Clearly, this incident is causing the police some concern and we need to get to the bottom of what happened.
“At the moment we are trying to piece together the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and are appealing to any witnesses to contact the police or Crimestoppers as soon as possible.
“It is highly unlikely that this was a random attack and we believe that the victim knew the man who assaulted her.
“However, we do need to identify the woman in question and ensure that she is ok, therefore I would appeal directly to her to come forward and let us know that she is safe and well.”
Anyone who can help the police with their enquiries is urged to contact York CID, on 0845 60 60 24 7, quoting reference number 12110166353.
Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111
