Police investigating a fatal road traffic collision on York’s outer ring road are appealing for a vital witness to come forward.
Officers believe that a woman driver who was directly behind one of the vehicles when the collision occurred may have important information that can help their enquiries.
The collision involving a Tesco articulated goods lorry travelling towards the A64 and a blue Vauxhall Signum travelling in the opposite direction occurred at around 8.15pm on Tuesday 20 September 2011 between the B1224 Wetherby Road and the Moor Lane roundabout on the A1237.
The woman police would like to trace left the scene shortly after the incident, before officers had a chance to speak to her.
The driver of the Vauxhall Signum, a man believed to be 40-years-old, was fatally injured and died at the scene of the collision. Enquiries are ongoing to identify him.
The driver of the lorry, a 59-year-old man from Doncaster, suffered minor injuries in the collision which were treated at York District Hospital.
Investigating officers are appealing to anyone who has information about the collision to get in touch.
Traffic Constable Lee Cobb, of Tadcaster Roads Policing Group, said:
“It is important that anyone who witnessed the collision contacts the police as soon as they can.
“We would particularly like to speak to a woman who was directly behind the lorry when the collision happened. She left the scene immediately after the incident and she may well have information that could be very helpful to the investigation.
“I urge anyone who witnessed the collision itself or saw either vehicle prior to the incident to contact the police with information.”
The Road was closed for around eight hours as collision investigators conducted their enquiries and the vehicles were cleared from the scene.
Anyone who can help the police with their enquiries is urged to contact TC Lee Cobb, of Tadcaster Roads Policing Group, on 0845 60 60 24 7, quoting reference number NYP-20092011-0417.
