The police released a plea for information on monday:

Police in York are appealing for information following a bag snatch in the city.

It occurred at 8.50am Monday 25 July when an 82-year-old woman was walking along Tadcaster Road, near Ainsty Grove, towards the city centre when a man riding a pedal cycle, on the pavement, grabbed her handbag as he rode past.

Following the theft, the suspect rode off in the direction of Thanet Road.

The man is aged around 30, white with a pale complexion and light brown hair. He was wearing light beige coloured top and trousers.

PC Colin Sutherland, of York Safer Neighbourhood Team, said:

“Thankfully the woman was not hurt during this theft. However, it has naturally left her shaken and upset.

“I urge anyone who witnessed this appalling theft, from a vulnerable member of our community, or can help to identify the man responsible to contact the police immediately."
