Police in Malton are appealing for witnesses following an assault in the town.

It occurred just before 11.30pm on Saturday 16 July 2011, near the railway crossing on Norton Street.

During the incident a 25-year-old local man was hit on the head, knocking him to the ground. He was treated at the scene for a head injury by paramedics.

An 18-year-old local man was arrested in connection with the assault on Sunday 17 July 2011. He has now been released on bail to allow for further police enquiries.

PC Mark Rees, of Malton Safer Neighbourhood Team, said:

“At this stage the attack appears to be motiveless and I am asking anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.

“Fortunately the injuries suffered by the victim, although nasty, were not as serious as they could have been.

“At the time of the incident, there were people in the area and a number of vehicles drove around the victim as he lay in the road. I urge anyone either on foot or in a vehicle to contact the police as a matter of urgency.”

If you can assist with this investigation please contact PC Mark Rees at Malton Police Station on 0845 60 60 24 7 quoting reference number 12110118541. Or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
