6:56am 7th July 2011

Nine prisoners have been treated on the westbound carriageway of the A64 after a G4 prison van overturned near Tadcaster yesterday.

North Yorkshire Police have confirmed it collided with another vehicle, near Slice Lane just after 5pm.

The occupants of the other vehicle were uninjured.

All the prisoners are accounted for and were being heavily guarded by officers along the carriageway.

Three of them had to go to York District Hospital for further treatment.

At the time of the incident they were being transported from Hull Prison to various locations around the country.

The category of these inmates and the severity of their crimes is unknown.

The A64 westbound carriageway was closed to one lane for around 4 hours whilst an investigation was carried out.

Up to six miles of traffic built-up as motorists slow down to look at the incident.

None of the injuries were life threatening.
