Man bailed over Yorkshire hit-and-run

Police in West Yorkshire have bailed a man they were questioning following the death of a six year-old boy.

Owen Wightman died after being knocked over by a car in Wakefield on Saturday.

A 21 year-old man from Huddersfield has been questioned on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.


The incident occurred at around 12.20pm on Saturday 18th June on Fishpond Lane in the Chapelthorpe area of Wakefield.

Six-year-old pedestrian, Owen Wightman, of Kettlethorpe was struck by what is believed to have been a grey or light coloured small hatchback type vehicle which failed to stop at the scene.

Dave Cording, Crimestoppers’ Deputy Chief Executive said:

“This is a tragic incident in which a young life has suddenly been cut short."
