Sophie Monkman and Lee McKenzie in the York commentary box

12:00am 1st June 2011

The hunt for Britain's first female race commentator is on and York Racecourse has a runner.

Sophie Monkman, a Marketing Assistant at the track has entered this fabulous competition organized by and is already through to the quarter final to be held on Wednesday June 1st 2011.

A keen rider, and naturally a racing fan, Sophie cites Clare Balding as her favourite TV presenter, saying;

"when I was little I used to pretend to be Clare so when the chance to actually commentate came up, I couldn't resist it"

The winner will be invited to commentate on a live race at Ascot, on 24th July 2011 as well as receiving a cash prize of £2,500. Sophie continues, "of course I want to win but it is a shame that the Final clashes with a great raceday at York, I'll hope to follow the action from Berkshire."

Eager to pick up some tips, Sophie took the chance of the last raceday on the Knavesmire to see professional commentator Lee McKenzie in action.

The experienced caller listened to her competition entry and shared his commentary position for a race.

Lee said, "this is a great initiative and I was impressed by Sophie's entry. It looks like the competition will be tough so I hope I've helped find another York winner."
