Memorial benches burnt in Pocklington

1:08pm 21st April 2011

Police at Pocklington are investigating an offence of criminal damage to five benches belonging to Pocklington Cricket Club which occurred between 8.45pm Wednesday 20th April and 8am, Thursday 21st April, 2011.

Four garden style benches, which were provided through donations from the families of deceased members, and a larger wooden bench were moved from outside the pavilion at the ground into a nearby wooded area where they were set on fire, completely destroying the benches. The damage caused is estimated to be several hundred pounds.

Sergeant Peter Rogers, from Pocklington and Wolds Weighton, says:

"This is a particularly despicable act, given that the benches were donated by the families of deceased members" said Sergeant Peter Rogers of the Pocklington and Wolds Weighton Neighbourhood Policing Team. "Someone will know who is responsible and whoever was there will have come home smelling very strongly of being near a fire last night.

"We would ask anyone with information to contact Pocklington Police on 0845 60 60 222. We will be regularly checking the site on an evening in the light of this incident."
