York taxis fare well in police operation

Taxis fare well in police operation

Taxi checks carried out by York police this week found the majority of cabs operating in the city to be roadworthy.

On Monday 4th April 2011, officers carrying out road checks on Hackney carriages and private hire vehicles found that the majority of cabs checked were in good condition and safe to carry passengers.

Of the 32 vehicles stopped during the operation, 22 had no issues when subjected to mechanical checks by VOSA officials. City of York Council's Taxi Licensing Department were also on hand to verify drivers' licenses.

Officers spotted an improvement in the standard of taxis compared to previous operations and hope the public will be reassured that drivers are making the effort to conform to safety standards.

Traffic Constable David Hunter, of North Yorkshire Police's Road Policing Group, said:

"As part of our continued efforts to tackle occupational road risk across the force area we are working with our partners to look at the standards of taxis operating on our roads.

"I am pleased to say that although there were a few prosecutions for offences, overall we found a good standard of drivers and taxis operating in the city during the day.

"The offences and issues that came to light during the operation were minor in their nature and hopefully this will serve to reassure the public that the taxis they are using are safe and roadworthy and the drivers are properly licensed."

During the course of the operation, taxi licensing officers suspended two drivers from working for not having the correct authorisation to drive a private hire vehicle and also suspended four vehicles from use.

Reducing the number of casualties on the roads is a priority for North Yorkshire Police and officers will continue to check taxis and prevent defected or unlicensed  vehicles from operating.

TC Hunter added:

"Continued enforcement is a vital part of ensuring this and we will be running further operations throughout the force over the coming months.

"Hopefully these operations will also serve to reassure legitimate taxi drivers and companies that unlicensed drivers will be robustly dealt with."

Anyone with concerns or information about taxi drivers or firms should contact North  Yorkshire Police on 0845 60 60 24 7 or the local council's taxi licensing department.
