(Updated 3:40pm 4th April 2011)

A gang attack on a man in York.

On Saturday night a 20 year old was jumped by about 4 or 5 men on the banks of the River Ouse.

They broke his nose, slashed his face and left a gash to his head.

North Yorkshire Police have described it as a particularly "nasty assault."

They're now tracing a passer-by who acted as a good samaritian and offer the victim his jumper to keep him warm.

PC Tania Gillman, of York police, said:

"This was a nasty assault which left the victim needing hospital treatment.

"The actions of the man who helped the victim following the incident deserve praise and I am appealing for him to contact the police as he may have information that can help the investigation.

"I am also appealing for anyone else who may have witnessed the assault to contact the police or Crimestoppers."

Anyone who has any information that could help the police with their enquiries is urged to contact PC Tania Gillman, of York Police, on 0845 60 60 24 7, quoting reference number 12110048353.

Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
