Find out what crimes are committed on your street.

A new website which allows users in England and Wales to pinpoint what crimes have been committed in their areas has launched.

It's the first time such detailed crime maps have been available for an entire country anywhere in the world.

However the site crashed yesterday.

It is back up and running today, but it can be a little slow.

'Power to the People'.

That's how Home Secretary Theresa May describes a new street by street crime guide for England and Wales.

By logging on you can find out exactly what goes on where you live.

According to the figures, the worst area in York city center was between Tower Street and the Shambles as 138 crimes are logged.

833 crimes were reported in the city center during Decemeber. 373 of those were anti-social and 113 violent offences.

Mrs May says the maps will help bring down crime.

Critics argue some people may be really alarmed or frightened by knowing crimes are happening within a mile of their homes.

Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper has welcomed the maps, but wants police strength for forces across the UK included - saying:

"knowing where crime takes place isn't enough if there aren't sufficient police to deal with it".

As well as detailing crimes, you will be able to find out the the names of the officers responsible for your area.

Crime trends will also be established and this could be extended to include details on the outcomes of court cases in the future.

So far the site's proving popular - Home Office officials are warning of delays and advising to"Keep trying."
