More gay pride for York.

6:11am 28th January 2011

Dan Sidley, Labour candidate for Fishergate ward in the May local elections, has become the first person to use the Council's new online e-petition system.

His 'somewhere over the rainbow' petition submitted under the title 'Raise Our Flag' calls for the Rainbow Flag to fly above York's historic Mansion House during LGBT history month in February (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender).

Also know as the Pride Flag, the Rainbow Flag is a symbol of diversity originating from San Francisco in 1978. Dan who is Chair of York Gay Pride set up the petition and contacted the Council's Chief Executive asking for the flag to be flown.

Dan Sidley says:

"It would be a great symbolic gesture to York's LGBT community for the flag to be flown above such an historic York building for a period during LGBT history month. It would show there is a civic pride in the diversity modern York now enjoys while respecting the struggle for acceptance by iconic figures such as Harvey Milk."

Dan Sidley is also co-founder of the Yorkshire Swan Rescue Hospital.
