11:16am 25th January 2011

Police in York are appealing for witnesses following an act of criminal damage to a historic landmark outside the Minster.

It occurred overnight between Monday 10th and Tuesday 11th January when the statue of Constantine the Great, close to the main entrance of York Minster in Minster Yard, was daubed with green paint.

A 31 year old local man has been arrested and released on police bail while police enquiries continue.

Police Constable Gareth Vaughan, of the Response Team at York, said:

"The vandalism of this statue is a disgraceful act of utterly pointless damage to a well known and popular landmark in the city.

"I urge anyone who knows anything about this incident to come forward and contact me as I need to speak with them as soon as possible."

If you can help police with this enquiry please contact PC Gareth Vaughan at York Police Station on 0845 60 60 24 7 quoting reference number 12110005247.

They can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
