(Updated 10:11am 10th January 2011)
As part of an ongoing programme of improvements to the A1237 Outer Ring Road, work will start shortly to increase the capacity of the A19 (Shipton Road) junction.
The scheme will reduce congestion and queue lengths at the roundabout and help reduce journey times in this area.
The works are programmed to start on 10 January and should take approximately 12 weeks to complete, with anticipated completion by late March.
The proposed improvements comprise:
- widening of both the A1237 approaches and the A19 southbound approach to the roundabout to provide 3 entry lanes (left, ahead and ahead/right);
- localised widening of the A1237 to provide twin exit lanes from the roundabout;
- provision of improved pedestrian crossing facilities;
- carriageway resurfacing, and;
- signing / street lighting improvements.
Working hours will generally be restricted to 9.30am – 4.30pm, Monday to Friday, to minimise the impact on traffic flow through the junction and adjoining roads. However, certain activities may require working into the evenings or weekends, and some surfacing work will need to be carried out overnight.
As with any construction work, there is likely to be a certain amount of disruption and inconvenience, but everything possible will be done to keep this to a minimum.
Traffic management will comprise lane narrowing to maintain traffic flows through the junction and to provide safe working areas. On occasions, temporary traffic signals will be required. For activities such as carriageway resurfacing, lane closures will be required, but it is envisaged that no full closures or diversions will be necessary.
