The Archbishop of York has recorded a special video message for brave servicemen who will be separated from their loved ones this Christmas.
The ‘Faces for the Forces’ campaign is aiming to collect 1 million goodwill messages and the Archbishop’s message will form part of a film that the Ministry of Defence will send to all barracks in Afghanistan and other areas where British troops are based.

The Archbishop also mentioned the importance of the armed forces today in his online advent calendar where he wrote:
“We pray for those serving in the armed forces, and especially for the four battalions of the Yorkshire Regiment. We remember also those who have paid the ultimate price in seeking to bring peace to places of conflict, they have sacrificed their lives on our behalf. We pray for them and their families.”
The text of the Archbishop’s Faces for the Forces video message follows:
“I want to say a big ‘Thank You’ to all our armed services. You are the best and bravest servicemen in the world and we all owe you a massive debt of gratitude for what you do.
“It must be so hard to leave the ones you love behind to go out and serve your country – putting your lives at risk on a daily basis to protect our freedoms. You are real heroes.
“We are all very proud of the contribution you are making for our country. We will continue to keep you in our thoughts and I pray each and every one of you will return home safely.
“Thank you. And keep going for it!”
