Fifty-eight Ambulance Staff Assaulted in Yorkshire

Recent figures released on violence-related incidents against NHS staff have shown a slight upturn in the number of reported assaults at Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust.

Fifty-eight incidents of physical assault were reported by ambulance staff in the region between 1 April 2009 and 31 March 2010 according to figures published by the NHS Security Management Service. Last year this figure was 51.

Keith Prior, A&E Operations Director at the Trust, said:

"The safety of our staff is of paramount importance and we are committed to driving these figures down.

"It is appalling that ambulance staff who do a difficult job, often in challenging circumstances, have been attacked as they try to save lives. One incident is one too many as far as we are concerned and we remain committed to preventing these occurrences.

"Physical and verbal attacks on any member of NHS staff are completely unacceptable and we operate a zero tolerance policy against violent and aggressive behaviour. We encourage the reporting of such incidents so that action can be taken to prosecute those who are violent and aggressive towards our ambulance crews.”
