Yorkshire woman dies after falling in freezing lake

3:36pm 1st December 2010
(Updated 11:12am 2nd December 2010)

The Winter weather claims its first victim; and it's right here in Yorkshire.

A woman's died after falling into a freezing lake at Pontefract Racecourse.

Earlier, a man's body was also found on the M3 in Surrey; although on this occasion it's thought it was a suspected suicide.

Now we're being told the snow and ice is set to continue.

Yorkshire's one of the worst hit areas along with large areas of Wales and Scotland.

The snow's also causing problems at the UK's second busiest airport; Gatwick's been closed until tomorrow.

There are predictions the disruption from snow and ice will cost the UK economy up to £1.2 billion a day.

Insurance company RSA says it's because of staff not being able to get into work and people not spending money.

Rail services are struggling and there's criticism about a failure to clear the roads better.

In North Yorkshire a number of lorries have jack-knifed on the A1.

A Spokesperson from the North Yorkshire police force has told Minster FM:

"As yet there have been no major crashes on North Yorkshire's road today (3pm Wedensday 1st December 2010).

"Even on the major trunk-roads our advise remains drive with with."
