Men sentenced for the murder of a Yorkshire shopkeeper

Two men have been jailed for life for beating a Yorkshire shopkeeper to death with wine bottles from his shelves during a robbery.

20 year old Muawaz Khalid must spend at least 21 years in prison while 18 year old Nabeel Shafi was given a 20 year minimum term.

Gurmail Singh was attacked at his shop in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire in February.

Three other men were also sentenced in connection with related crimes:

Sentences passed at Bradford Crown today are as follows:

Khalid - 21 years

Shaffi - 20 years

Aslam - 6 1/2 years for robbery

Afzal - 5 years 4 months for robbery

Khan - 8 months for assisting an offender

Detective Superintendent Dave Pervin from West Yorkshire Polices Homicide and Major Enquiry Team (HMET) said

"The people sentenced will have a long time to reflect on what they have done in robbing and murdering Mr Singh. I would like to thank the brave people who tried to prevent those responsible from getting away from the scene of the crime."
