Police in Selby have arrested a man on suspicion of running an illegal scrap yard.
During a joint warrant conducted this morning (Tuesday 9th November 2010), in partnership with the Environment Agency and British Transport Police, officers arrested a 40 year old man on suspicion of running an unlicensed scrap yard at his home in Great Heck.
The man was questioned by Environment Agency officers about the alleged collection and processing of controlled waste without an environmental permit.
Inspector Richard Abbott, of Selby Rural Safer Neighbourhood Team, said:
“It is an offence to deal in scrap metal without a license and something which we and our partners take very seriously.
“It is important that people use licensed scrap dealers who have the knowledge and capability to handle metal in a manner that is safe and not hazardous to the environment.”
The man has been released on bail as enquiries continue.
