York Against the War

(1) MEETING: We wish to draw your attention to a public meeting next week at which the speakers will be Joe Glenton, well known York ex-soldier, and Joan Humphreys of Military Families Against the War.

The meeting, entitled "Who are we fighting for?" will be held:

                           on: Wednesday November 3rd 2010

                            at: 7.30pm

in: The Friends' Meeting House, Friargate, York

Joe Glenton is the York soldier who, after serving in Afghanistan, refused to go back there because he did not think Britain's cause was just.  He went AWOL, but later gave himself up. After risking very serious charges by speaking at a Stop the War rally in Trafalgar Square, he served six months army detention in Colchester.  Now he is an ex-soldier and a university student.  We welcome him back to York and hope many people will come to hear about Afghanistan from his unique viewpoint as first soldier, then opponent of the war.

Joe is happy to be interviewed: contact him on 07807-135726.

Joan Humphreys is an active member of Military Families Against the War, a group founded by bereaved parents of dead service people, but open to all families of service men and women.  Joan is in the sad position of having lost not a son but a grandson in Afghanistan last year.  But she does not want to talk about her own troubles, rather about the war in Afghanistan from the perspective of soldiers' families, and why she, like so many soldiers' relatives - and soldiers -  thinks we should withdraw our forces from Afghanistan.

Joan is happy to be interviewed: contact her on 07859-168440.

(2) DEMO AND COACH: We wish to draw attention also to the national demonstration against the ongoing war by the Stop the War Coalition in London on Saturday November 20th.  York Against the War has booked a coach for this, leaving Memorial Gardens near the station at 7.30am and James College, University of York, at 7.45am.  Coach tickets, at £16 (concessions £9) will be on sale at the public meeting, and at the YAW stall in Parliament Street on Saturdays (1.00pm-3.00pm).  They are also always on sale at Fairer World in Gillygate.
