Give your kitchen – and your garden – a Hallowe’en treat

Hallowe’en’s just around the corner … and it’s a great opportunity to go green.

Leftover pumpkins make delicious meals - try some of the recipes at www.lovefoodhatewaste.com for pumpkin tart, soup or even lasagne.

Once you’ve eaten your pumpkin and toffee apples, don’t forget to compost the seeds. Now’s the perfect time to start filling your compost bin, so that when spring arrives your compost will be nearly ready for use.

Compost bins can accept more than just apple cores and pumpkin seeds.  Other fruit and vegetable peelings, tea bags, coffee grounds, grass, paper and cardboard, vegetarian pet bedding and hoover bag contents can also be added to your bin.

To help you get started composting, the York and North Yorkshire Waste Partnership are working with Great Green Systems to offer residents low cost compost bins and food waste digesters. A 220l garden king compost bin is available for just £15 including delivery, with 330l garden king compost bins available for £17 including delivery.

If you produce a lot of cooked food waste, why not try food waste digesters. Green Johannas can deal with cooked and uncooked food waste and garden waste, and are available for £59 including delivery. Other food waste digesters such as wormeries, bokashi bins and green cones are also available.

To purchase one of the units mentioned above, visit www.greatgreensystems.com or contact them on 0800 731 2572. For more information  on composting and food waste digesters visit www.letstalklessrubbish.com
