Brand new health and leisure facilities open their doors in Selby

Brand new health and leisure facilities open their doors in Selby

10:17am 13th September 2010

Selby's newest health and leisure facilities is officially opened today, celebrating the first major milestone of an innovative partnership to improve leisure services in the district.

The brand new Profiles Health and Fitness suite at Abbey leisure Centre will welcome a range of guests to mark the occasion.  This is the culmination of several months' work on site to deliver state-of-the-art gym equipment, new refreshment areas and health facilities.

This £1.1million refurbishment of Abbey Leisure Centre is part of an innovative deal between Selby District Council and not-for-profit WLCT, which now runs leisure services in the district on behalf of the local authority.  The ten year deal has been put in place to facilitate new investment whilst reducing year-on-year costs for the Council - therefore making better use of taxpayers' money to deliver improvements for local residents.

The development includes a brand new 75-station fitness suite, new dance studio, sauna, steam room and consultation room.  The fitness suite uses the very latest in interactive technology, to enable people to monitor their fitness progress over days, weeks and months, as well as giving instructors a chance to set individual challenges for people using the gym equipment.

The Chair of Selby District Council's Social Board, Cllr Gillian Ivey, explained that the new facilities have been made possible because of the innovative deal between the Council and WLCT, "This has set out a framework for new investment in leisure services in the Selby district.  Our goal has always been to use this to improve services for residents and these new facilities do just that.  But there's the added benefit that the deal between ourselves and WLCT actually saves the Council money in the long-run, so we're getting so much more for our money under this partnership arrangement."

WLCT's Executive Director (Sport and Healthy Living), Martin Eden, added, "We've seen a huge increase in the number of people signing up to join our fitness centre as people have been looking forward to using these new facilities.  Even before we opened, over 600 new members joined up.  That's a massive commitment from the people of the Selby district to use their local health and fitness facilities, and shows that there is the appetite out there for people to keep fit and healthy.

"We've got the very latest technology in place to ensure that the new Profiles Health and Fitness suite is a real community resource - there's particular support and dedicated facilities for those less able, so everyone can take part."
