Car Free Day, which was supported by Minster FM on Tuesday, has been hailed a success by the City of York Council.
Occupancy at a number of city centre car parks was down and traffic on Monkgate, Foss Islands Road and Hull Road was slightly quieter than normal.
Over 400 free bus tickets were also issued as part of the initiative and the number of people using the Park & Ride was up.
