Iconic theatre demolition plans approved

Futurist Theatre

Scarborough Borough Council's planning committee has approved plans to demolish the town's Futurist Theatre.

At a specially convened planning meeting on Friday, planners voted 11-3 to approve the detailed plans which deal with how the buildings will be knocked down.

The plans don't deal with what will happen to the site after that, other than describing how the site will be left in a temporary vacant state, an artists impression of that state was shown to the committee.

The Theaters Trust had submitted an objection to the demolition plans.

The organisation now says it will ask the Secretary of State to take a look at the decision, in a statement on their website the group says...

"At a planning meeting today (20/10/17) Scarborough Councillors voted in favour of demolition of the Futurist Theatre.

The Futurist is on our Theatres at Risk Register.

We are extremely disappointed that Scarborough Borough Council has decided to approve the demolition of the Futurist Theatre.

Retention and reuse of the landmark Futurist as a performance venue had such clear public support, and was a real opportunity for the Council to listen to the wishes of its community.

We have requested that the planning application be called-in by the Secretary of State, and are awaiting their decision on the matter."
