York Rally of Solidarity on World Homeless Day

Homeless

5:18pm 26th September 2017

York Big Issue sellers Liam Bigiss and Norbert Lawrie, along with local supporters, have organised a public rally in support of World Homeless Day 2017

The rally will call on all local and national politicians to do more to address a growing housing and homeless in all it's many different guises.

That could be from the hidden homeless, families and single people living in temporary housing, to rough sleepers.

Liam Bigiss said:

For such a long time we have been wanting to do something to make more people aware of this everyday growing crisis in our city and in the rest of the country."

Recent reports have indicated that homelessness is expected to more than double to half a million by 2041 unless the government takes immediate action, and so this spurred us on to action"

Liam says that the theme chosen for the evening is children and a possible homeless future of a life on the streets.

Norbert said:

"it is really unacceptable that anyone should have to sleep on our streets here in York and in towns and cities around the streets, and yet the number of people sleeping rough has continued to grow year on year to shocking levels.

That's why we are hosting this event.

The local event will open with a prayer led by Revd, Dr. John Schofield, Trinity Methodist Church Monkgate, Pastor to York Big Issue sellers,

They will have guest speakers, music and some refreshments.

It's at 6 pm on Tuesday October 10th at St Helen’s Square.
