VIDEO - York Cares wants your help in Tang Hall

York Cares 2017

3:54pm 17th May 2017

The well known 70s sofa in the play area needs an image makeover.

Employee-volunteering charity York Cares is asking businesses and local volunteers in the city to get involved in its latest Big Community Challenge.

This year volunteers are invited to get stuck into a renovation of the outdoor space at York’s Tang Hall Community Centre as it continues its transformation into a vibrant community hub for social enterprise and social inclusion.

Project managed by York Cares in partnership with Tang Hall Community Centre and Evora Construction, the challenge will run for three days from Monday 5 – Wednesday 7 June. Volunteers are encouraged to sign up in groups of up to 10 people to give just three hours of their time during a morning (9.30-12.30) or afternoon (13.00-16.00) slot.

In particular, the team at York Cares would be delighted to welcome volunteers from the local community who would like to be involved and sign up for either a half or full day of volunteering. They are also on the lookout for any local businesses that may be able to donate materials such as pavers, sand, bark chips and top soil.

Caroline Wilcock, Volunteering Projects Officer, commented:

“We have had a great response from business volunteers with over 150 already signed up. We are really excited to be working with local businesses and the local community to create a really fantastic outdoor space and hope that more businesses and volunteers can sign up or donate materials to help make this happen.”

Tasks that will be assigned to those taking part will include converting the basketball court into a multi-purpose outdoor space and creating a link path to the Sustrans cycle path.

Efforts will also be made to make the space especially usable for local school children and their families, thanks to the creation of raised beds and a composting area for food growing projects.

Companies signed up to take part so far include Nestle, Aviva, The Partners Group, Benenden, City of York Council, John Lewis, Waitrose, Yorkshire Bank and Portakabin. Expertise and materials are being provided by Evora Construction, Portakabin and Johnsons of Whixley.

Previous projects that have benefited as part of York Cares’ Big Community Challenge include Hull Road Park, Osbaldwick Primary School, Windsor House and Morrell House elderly people’s homes, West Bank Park, Rowntree Park, Foxwood Community Centre and Bell Farm Adventure Playground.

Tang Hall Community Centre is a community incorporated organisation that has recently taken on a 30-year management lease for the community venue from City of York Council. Organisations based at THCC include Tang Hall Big Local and Your Cafe (a pay as you feel cafe), with York CVS providing an advice drop in and Community Base who provide support for adults with learning difficulties.

Stephen Collins, Tang Hall Community Centre Manager, said:

“We want the outdoor space at the centre to mirror the great things that are happening within. By making the centre visually attractive it will better reflect Tang Hall as a great place to work and live and encourage people to come into the centre and find out what they can be involved in.”
