Anti fracking campaigners from across Ryedale are protesting outside Barclays Bank today.
Campaigners say Barclays Bank owns Third Energy whose planning application to carry out hydraulic fracturing at Kirby Misperton is currently been challenged in a Judicial Review due to be heard in the High Court in November.
WATCH - Anti-Fracking protest outside Barclays bank in Malton:
The Ryedale protest kicks off a week of action across the UK (24 – 29th October) against Barclays support of the fracking industry and will feature a group of campaigners dressed as witches.
Josie Downs of Frack Free Malton and Norton said:
“Despite mounting evidence on health impacts and obvious local unpopularity, Barclays still seem bewitched by fracking. Let’s break the spell this Halloween!
“We’d like to say to Barclays customers ‘Please consider closing your bank account with them’ because financial pressure from customers will convince Barclays that fracking isn't worth it.
“Barclays themselves recently predicted a ‘transfer of wealth’ from fossil fuel investments to renewable energy, so why on earth are they not following their own advice ?”
Ian Conlan, from Frack Free Ryedale said:
“Barclays owns fracking company Third Energy, who got approval to frack in Ryedale in May - despite thousands of Iocal objections.
“There is huge momentum against fracking in the UK, with Wales and Scotland putting in place moratoriums on shale gas drilling. Barclays need to recognise the strength of feeling against this hugely damaging industry and that if they don’t change their attitude to supporting the fossil fuel industry it will be damaging to their business”.
